BOOK OF EZRA

WEEK SEVEN: DEVOTED TO GOD

READ: CHAPTER SEVEN

DEVOTIONAL

Chapter Seven – DEVOTED TO GOD

Ezra led a second wave of exiles to return to Jerusalem in 458 BC. Ezra was a priest who appreciated the new temple but observed that the people’s hearts were not devoted to God. His emphasis is on character and honoring God. Ezra led by example as he studied Scripture, lived out God’s Word, and taught others the Bible. A healthy walk with God includes knowing His Word, living it, and generously and intentionally paying it on to others.

It starts individually, then with families, then with the church, then with the city.

There was no motive for personal gain; Ezra wanted to be faithful to God and lead the people back to their Maker. Advancing God’s cause requires courage and a counter-cultural mindset.

You have to want to honor God more than being liked or approved by people.

Ezra gives God all of the glory for every blessing and provision. Listen to God and how He wants to use you to reach your generation.

PRAYER

Holy God, You have made us to know and serve You. We are fulfilled when we are close to You and doing what You have called us to do. May we do more than just read Your Word. Forgive us for our selfishness and silence. We choose to pass along what You have taught us. We want to intentionally build up others in their relationship with You. Thank You for filling us with purpose. May we make the most of our opportunities for Your kingdom, Jesus, amen.
