Philip’s Journey: More Purpose

INTRODUCTION

Following Jesus is exciting and meaningful. Jesus told the professional fishermen who decided to follow Him that they would catch people. The call was personal and proactive.

It’s time to make disciples. Jesus introduces us to new roles, positions, and projects. We are made to glorify God and enjoy a relationship with God forever. Jesus saves us from sin so that we can step into our purpose.

We don’t just make a difference for God; we joyfully serve with God. If you have been feeling stuck and distracted, Philip’s life will encourage you. It’s hard to steer a parked car, so you will need to be willing to offer yourself to God, which is authentic worship.

Your readiness to step up is foundational, and Jesus will guide you as your Good Shepherd. (Isaiah 6:1-8).

BIG IDEA

God wants to fill you with supernatural purpose and passion. The Holy Spirit will empower you to be a witness for Jesus in many settings (Acts 1:8). Witnesses share what they have seen and heard. The root word is the same as martyr. You have a high calling and are not merely living for yourself now. God says you are His priest, helping people know God (1 Peter 2:9).

Philip lived with purpose as he cared for overlooked Greek widows. Philip lived with purpose as he preached the gospel in Samaria and led people to Jesus. Philip lived with purpose as he led people out of sin and demonic oppression. Philip lived with purpose as he helped the Ethiopian man understand the Bible and start a relationship with God. Philip lived with purpose as he baptized his new friend, and the gospel spread to Africa.

God will do more than you can anticipate when you are committed to Jesus (Ephesians 5:1-2).

KEY POINTS

  • God does His greatest work in the most difficult times.
  • Be devoted to God in all you say and do and trust Him with the results.
  • Jesus is transforming lives, one person at a time.
  • The love of God reaches across cultural barriers.
  • The purpose of God is connected to changed lives.
  • Guard your heart and a good attitude so you are ready for God’s promptings.
  • Keep in step with the Holy Spirit and God’s perfect timing.

CONCLUSION

We need to make room for God’s purpose in our lives. Our schedules are overloaded with entertainment, scrolling, watching television, hobbies, and empty distractions. We need to be very intentional about slowing down and listening to God. We need to make some brave and clear shifts in our priorities.

Seek first the kingdom of God. The purpose of God will lead you into courageous conversations, new relationships, and serving as you use your spiritual gifts. You will share your story and take gospel risks. God will open your eyes to the needs around the world, and you will touch lives in other countries.

New wine doesn’t fit in old wineskins. Don’t quench the Holy Spirit or put out the fire of God. Embers fade alone, but together there is a bonfire. Let God connect purpose and passion in your soul.
