Timothy’s Journey: More Faith
INTRODUCTION
God’s design for the family is that the older generations train the younger ones to know the Lord. It’s a blessing to have inspiring relatives who walk with God and build their relationship with God.
Timothy’s mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, lived out their faith and taught him Scripture. Paul was Timothy’s spiritual father.
We all need mentors who disciple us. We learn from others, and we also need to own our faith and seek the Lord directly, too. God began a good work in Timothy and called him to continue to grow. We should be eager to go deeper with God and serve Him wholeheartedly. God was preparing Timothy through mission trips to lead and shepherd the church in Ephesus eventually.
God has roles for us that we can’t plan or predict. We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:5-10).
BIG IDEA
God has new victories for you that you receive and experience by faith. Pastoring the church in Ephesus was a major challenge. There was significant commerce and activity. It was a center of pagan worship and idolatry. There were many false teachers, myths, and controversies.
Timothy wrestled with fears and insecurities. He needed to teach sound doctrine and refute the lies. Even though he was young for this role, he needed to set an example with his lifestyle. We grow the most during challenging times. Paul exhorted Timothy to stay in Ephesus. Timothy learned to rely on God in the trials. He served with the love, truth, and power of God. Timothy was humble and faithful.
Faith develops when we exercise it. You can know the right answers, but wisdom includes making good life decisions. God will give you assignments that test and refine your character (James 1:2-8).
KEY POINTS
- Every person makes their own decision to follow Jesus.
- God will help you overcome fear and excuses.
- God calls you to share Scripture and build people up in their relationship with Jesus.
- God doesn’t necessarily call you to the easy places or churches.
- Learn as much as you can from mentors who lead well and care about you.
- Find reliable and teachable people and help them grow in their faith.
- Be intentional and train the next generation to walk with Jesus.
CONCLUSION
Timothy was a consistent beacon in a city that worshipped the false goddess, Artemis. He didn’t waver in his confidence in the reliability of the Bible. He passed along what he learned. Timothy poured his life into the church. City transformation happens through healthy churches.
Get connected in your church and start discipling people. Serve and be a great blessing. Opposition was constant for Timothy. He learned to overcome and chose faith over fear (2 Timothy 1:6-8). There are reports that he eventually died as a martyr. He didn’t shrink back in his calling.
Throw off sin and set your eyes on Jesus. Run the race marked out for you. Have confidence in God, who is both with you and goes ahead of you.
